FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) about Etched Glass

1. What is Etched art glass?
Etched art glass is usually clear plate glass that has been roughened by either an abrasive (such as sand) or an acid.  The rough surface scatters light, thereby giving a "whitish" appearance to the etched area. Etching can also be done on colored "flashed" glass.  Flashed glass is composed of two or more layers of different color glass, and etching removes one of the layers and reveals the other color.

2. What is the difference between the appearance of acid and abrasive etched glass?
Acid etching produces a very fine disturbance to the glass surface which interrupts the visibility through the glass and appears as a very pale "gray".  Abrasive etch produces a deeper roughness and produces more of a "white" effect.  The coarser the abrasive, the more "white" the effect.

3. Which type of etch is best?

They each have their purpose.  Acid etched glass is manufactured very uniformly in specific patterns that US Art Glass purchases from suppliers. Abrasive etched glass can be designed and made to any custom design. We do that in our studio, but obtaining a consistent uniform etch effect is difficult with abrasives.

4. How does etched glass compare in price to other forms of art glass?
Etched glass generally costs less than other forms of art glass because the materials (plate glass and abrasive) are less expensive, and because there is less labor involved.

5. What factors determine the price of etched glass?
The fabrication cost is primarily a function of size and complexity of the piece. The more complex the image, the greater is the cost per square foot because of the labor involved in drawing the design, cutting out the mask, and abrasive-blasting the glass.

6. Can you give a ball-park of the costs for etched art glass?
When we design and fabricate moderate complexity designs in etched glass, the range is usually between $75 and $125 per square foot, depending on the design and type of glass. Although that is a good average, we have done some very simple panels for less than $50 per sq-ft and some intricate panels for greater than $200+ per sq-ft.

7. Where will the etched glass be fabricated?
US Art Glass has its studio in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  From here we do our design, etching, fabrication and project coordination. On a larger project, we may involve one of our partners in assisting with the fabrication.
